报告摘要:It has become increasingly obvious that copper based interconnects are incapable of serving the future generation of Tera-Scale Computing. More performance and less energy will be required for the scaling; the electro-photonic link, in conjunction with fiber optics and optical waveguides, is practically one of the feasible solutions. Unlike copper conductors, electro-photonic interconnects do not suffer bandwidth limitation and crosstalk. However, they require additional electrical to optical and optical to electrical conversion devices to realize optical signal generation and detection. Moreover, restrictive optical alignment constraints and packaging complexities impose challenges to their scalability to higher channel-counts. To overcome the deficiencies that afflict electro-photonic interconnects, while maintaining their advantages, the dielectric waveguide based interconnect has very recently evolved as a very promising and fortuitous research topic; I maintain these devices are very definitely worthy of an extensive future research effort, and this is where I want to concentrate and focus my research activity. Although the challenges are immense, the potential reward is of unimaginable proportion.
